Explorer Poor Gas Mileage - including Ecoboost Are you looking for replies on all the Ecoboost engines or just the 3.5L? There are a couple threads on the 2.0 and 2.3 Ecoboosts. Driving styles differ so that will affect MPG as does the type of driving, highway vs city, Winter vs Summer. Your replies will likely be all over the place. Looking at getting a new F150 and I was wondering if anyone has experience with either the naturally aspirated 3.3 v6 or the Ecoboost 2.7? I realize there on the lower end of Ford's engine options, I'm on a recent graduate budget and I don't need THAT much of a truck. Just curious about the reliability, towing etc.

In my opinion, the 2.0 is much better suited to this vehicle than the 3.5L. The 2.0 has much more torque, and that torque is available at a much lower RPM than the 3.5. The 3.5 downshifts at the tiniest touch of the throttle, and it hunts around for the correct gear when going up and down rolling hills on the freeway.
So we know the 2.3 4's and the 2.7 v6 has had EGR in recent years. Well Ford added it to 3.5 for 2021. Get a 5.0 if you want to keep truck a long time.

Dave. Explorer weighs approx 4400 to 4900 lbs. not sure what your son has. Now a few websites report that the 2016 gets an AVERAGE of about 18 mpg with the lower end hitting on the 2.3 Ecoboost. This is also with a 6 speed tranny but not sure about all wheel or front wheel drive. The Ranger will have a 10 spd.

My guess is that Ford knows what their engines are capable of and has them appropriately assigned to their vehicles. Explorer platinum/st now have the 3.0 where last generation had (a presumably detuned) 3.5L. If the 3.5 had any future in a smaller package than the F-150 or expedition they would’ve kept it.
